Federal Aviation Administration

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), formerly the Federal Aviation Agency, became a part of the Department of Transportation in 1967 as a result of the Department of Transportation Act (80 Stat. 932). The Federal Aviation Administration is charged with regulating air commerce to foster aviation safety; promoting civil aviation and a national system of airports; achieving efficient use of navigable airspace; developing and operating a common system of air traffic control and air navigation for both civilian and military aircraft; and developing and implementing programs and regulations to control aircraft noise, sonic boom, and other environmental effects of civil aviation
